Just reporting in from Dublin Ireland with 2017 GLC 220d coupe AMG 19’s. Had same experiences with Mercedes dealers here, characteristic of the model, still safe etc and would not agree to replace tires.
Suffering with a touch of OCD, it had pretty much ruined my winter experience with the car to date, and to the point where my wife actually didn’t want to drive this car when I needed to borrow her xc90 for trailer duty.
On the recent 2nd service before warrantee expired, I raised the issue again with original dealer who confirmed the knuckle fix was now available. The fix was carried out this week and it’s completely remove clunking and skipping problem with outside temperature as low as 5%c while still on the original hankook summer tyres (AMG 19’s). But I had to return to the dealer because steering wheel was now a fraction off centre (OCD nightmares!). They competed steering wheel realignment under an hour while I waited and the service manager asked to accompany me on a test drive to make sure I was 100% happy. The conversation flowed, the garage Managing directors wife had a GLC, she didn’t notice issue but director did etc. The service manager confirmed that those who notice and complain will be now be accommodated, but its not an official recall. He said that some owners outside warranty were also being accommodated but that’s not an official stance either. I have already confirmed the fix to another owner who has booked his in. I might just go all out ‘Sheldon’ and start leaving notes on parked GLC’s!!!
The front tires are shredded at 20,000km while the rears look good for another 20,000km (vredestine Quatrac 4 all seasons now on order). I think the knuckle fix will dramatically improve the front tyre wear. But I would be interested to see if anyone can confirm if the fix still works below freezing point with summers still on .....perhaps post the lowest temp achieved without skipping after knuckle fix, mention tyre type /make /size and if they think wear rate has improved....
