Thanks to this forum I had my steering knuckle fix done in May at around 7000 miles which has definitely cured the clonking/skipping problem.....at the time I noted that the very outside edge of the front n/s tyre was wearing and "feathering / flicking up" and was over 50% worn but was fobbed off by the dealer saying they all do that as they are heavy cars (!!) and that fast cornering increases the problem.
Well, I've had "heavy cars" (and heavier cars) for a great many years now and am well past the stage in my life of hairing around corners!
Now at just over 11,000 miles there is almost zero visible tread on the very outside edge of said tyre, the remainder has around 5mm of tread across it as does the o/s front evenly all the way across it so it looks like I will have to replace at least the n/s one
I do not agree with only replacing one tyre but cannot justify replacing the other one with so much tread left on it
In my opinion it has worn excissively due to the aforementioned suspension problem and has continued to wear at the "normal rate" since then which, with the main tread at about 50% means the outer edge is worn out
Other people with (BMW) AWD cars have mentioned that different tread depths will seriously affect the AWD system and that ALL 4 tyres have to be replaced at the same time - which is not going to happen!!!....just wondered if I would face any problems having one front at about 5mm and the other at 7
