So after only 7,400 miles the front tyres on my GLC43 are down to the tread wear indicators over the majority of the tyre. They are showing much more wear through the center third which I know is a sign of over inflation but I'm very careful with tyre pressures and know this isn't the case here.
There is still a good 2mm of tread above the tread wear indicators on the rears.
I'm really surprised by this, mostly because I thought the torque split was fixed at 69% rear, 31% front so if anything would have expected the rears to wear faster. It's currently wearing Continental Sport Contact 5 (Mercdes OE) on the rear and Continental Sport Contact 5 * (BMW/Rolls Royce OE) on the front. This was apparently the tyre that prevented 21" wheels from crabbing but having taken delivery of the car in November and been through a decent winter I can confirm that they still crabbed right from the start.
To make matters worse, I discovered a nail in the nearside rear this morning and whilst it's definitely in the repairable zone, I'm not sure how comfortable I am with that given I have a fairly "spirited" driving style (as my tyre wear is attesting to).
It therefore appears I am in the market for 4 new tyres after only 8 months of ownership and was wondering what other people were putting on 21" rims? I've no real complaints over the performance of the Continentals (for a car that weighs this much the speed at which it will take some corners (on my private racetrack) is astonishing) but they haven't worn very well and I was just curious as to what others were using.
There are still no 21" all-season tyres available in 255x40x21Y form but there are Summer options from Pirelli, Michelin and Dunlop in addition to sticking with Continentals.
