Just had my B service done and the service advisor said my battery did not past a test and the cost to replace is $614. The battery is $299 and then almost $300 for installation. I asked him why I can't just buy the battery and install myself. He said the computer needs to be reset by special software for the new battery or the charging "profile" won't be correct. Is that true? I'm having a hard time with $300 installation even IF they need to reset the computer.

I had the B0 service just yesterday, February 20, 2023. I found this to be true. The short test revealed Code B1F4500. The “starter battery” unit price was $342.70 with a core return of -$28 at my local dealer. The labor was $173. This included erase of the codes and reset of the batter counter. I hope this helps.

Yes, you need to register the battery. The ecu tracks the number of hours on the battery. The older the battery gets the more aggressive the charge. Without resetting the counter the car will aggressively charge the battery shortening its life. I did a short video on this.

An Interstate battery is $320, a DieHard is $275. So, the battery itself is expensive. It should take 30 minutes or so to swap out the battery so the labor rate can be calculated hourly. If you dont have a reset tool/reader or a decent local Mercedes guy, you will probably have to pay the price. I invested in Thinkcar pro S scanner that was $1200 but I have used it on my Honda and Toyota as well as my GLD450. I juat hate be overcharged by the dealer.
