GLC300e Towbar question.

Hi guys,
I have a GLC300e almost here, finally. I have had it on order since mid Jan. My question is in regards to the factory fitted towbar that I paid for with my order. I was under the assumption that this would be a tuck away towbar fitted at the factory before my car began its long journey to me. However after discussions with the dealership/salesman he tells me that “No towbars come fitted from the factory to Australia” they all get fitted here once the vehicle arrives so as to make sure it meets all Australian specifications etc. Does anyone here know if this is true/fact? He also doesn’t know if it will be a tuck away or fixed towbar. So now I’m not sure what I should be expecting and accept as getting what I paid for.

Cheers

The Australian regs are different and they have a different Hayman Reese "official" towbar here.

That said, according to the spec sheet a towbar is not permitted on the 300e?

“Not permitted...” ?? The vehicle is rated for 2500Kg braked towing and it’s a factory option which I have paid for 🤷🏽‍♂️
I agree it has a tow rating, but the spec sheet is very clearly labelled for the 300e with
Code:
*** Towbar fitment not permitted
That fact was one of several reasons I didn't wait for the 300e.

🤷‍♂️
Hmmm..... Intersting. The dealership is getting my car on Monday, so I guess I will know early next week when I pick up my car if it is the $5K factory fitted towbar or not 😬
Best to get the towbar after you drive it away to avoid LCT.
Hi,

I have a 2020 GLC 300 and after similar discussions with the dealer, opted to go aftermarket... but last time I checked in, they didnt have the bar/kit yet (that was Dec).
Ok, so the update is. I finally picked up my car yesterday and it HAS a Mercedes Benz fitted towbar. I now officially have the first GLC300e with factory towbar in Australia. It was a headache and a half for Sydney City Mercedes but they got there in the end 😁 in the next update of the Spec sheets for this car it will now have a clear “Yes” for towbar compatible.

FYI, it’s not a cheap option at $5K for those who need it like myself but it’s factory approved and now has the correct software updates installed and the bigger blower for cooling installed.

Hi Doc,
Thanks for the news, I am currently looking at the 300e or the Lexus RX400. My preference is the 300e however the local dealer said a towbar was not available which is a big negative for me.
How have you found the 300e? Any options would be very welcome.

Thanks again,
Mick
G’day Mick,
Absolutely loving this car 👌🏽 I originally was also looking at the Lexus but after test driving it on the same day with Merc it was a no brainer for me. Night and day. Plus the Lexus IS not a true electric hybrid where you can drive it purely in electric mode. So far we have done 2900km and 1/3 of the way into our 3rd tank of petrol.

I’m not sure where you are located but you can tell the dealer he doesn’t know what he is talking about. As I said above my 300e has the towbar fitted. Tell him to talk to Sydney City Mercedes. I can give you the name of my sales rep if needed.

As for options, I got it fully decked out except for the Augmented reality Nav. The standard Navigation is more than enough for me. Also couldn’t justify the extra $5l for seat cooling. Other than that, I got everything else.

Thanks for the quick reply Doc, it is very much appreciated.
We live in Wollongong and I will be speaking to the dealer very soon.
I actually made a typo and asked you for options, what I had meant to ask you was your opinion on the 300e, but I feel you well and truely answered that....👍

Thanks again.

Hi Doc,
I have placed an order for the GLC330e this weekend. The dealer did get the factory fitted genuine Mercedes towbar, he said it is the 50mm square hitch type. (which I require).
The car is in stock in Australia and I will take delivery in December. Looking forward to taking delivery.
Thanks again

Mick
