How to lock doors from the passenger side?

Last night I went to collect some food while my wife and the kids are staying in the car. I also need to leave the car key to them so they can keep the engine/heating running and video playing.

I couldn't figure out how to lock the doors in that situation to keep them safe???

She tried to press the lock button on the key fob when they were inside the car, doesn't work.

I try to step outside the car and leave the key in the car then press the handle, doesn't work either.

I also notice there is no lock/unlock button on the passenger side door. How strange is that?

Any ideas how this could happen and how to resolve this guys?

With UK models I think your wife would have to lean across to the driver's side door handle and operate the lock button fitted in the handle recess. This can be done whether the fob is in the car or not. The vertical buttons that pop up or down when the doors lock/unlock are solenoid operated and cannot be used manually. In other markets MB fit lock/unlock buttons in the passenger-side door handle recess which is obviously much more convenient. The only locking options in the car's Settings are for your fob to unlock all doors or just the driver's door. I have a 2016 220d Sport Premium+
