Hi All,

My car has left the factory and my dealer just emailed to say that as I ordered my car in December, they were not aware of the tax increase therefore I have to pay an additional £700 for it. As far as I am aware, the contract I signed was for an on the road car at the price it stated therefore do they have the right to ask for this additional payment or is it something they have to absorb?

Thanks

Difficult one as the increase was a government one not a manufacturer one, as everybody was trying to get their cars registered by March 31st would imagine the increase will be down to the buyer but hopefully wrong, let us know how you go on. Also if your car including extras and pre any discount came to more than £40000 you will also have to pay an extra £150 in tax for the next 4 years on top of the £140 car tax.

i guess it depends if the amount you signed on was the final payment vs MSRP/pre-tax amount. but generally speaking, at least in canada, tax is never included in the agreed upon price. that is always added on after the fact.

Thanks all. The price was agreed including tax (so on the road)

The original sales guy spoke with me about this when ordering the car in December and he was trying to get me a delivery before the tax change occurred. As he failed to do so, we had a conversation about the increase in tax and who would be liable to pay this as the only reason I ordered the car with this dealership was the discount provided and the promise of a March 1st delivery. He confirmed that the price invoiced was the price I would pay regardless of when a slot could be allocated as he could not give me a definitive date of delivery in order for me to place my business with them compared to another dealer. Since then, the guy has left and this was all verbal so the current sales manager is looking at it.

Phil, I have a GLC43 Coupe so the tax hits us hard! £1200 for the first year as opposed to the £500 I was quoted.

Yes JitP, I have a 43 but not the coupe, we are hit hard but you will love the car.

Mine was delivered March 1st and it is a superb car.

If you had the agreement fingers crossed the manager will honour it, all dealers were aware of the increase in cost after April 1st.

May be worth filling in your location on your profile so we know where you are based, helps with replies as different rules apply and specs for different countries.

Thanks Phil - all updated now. Will keep people posted - just can't wait to get it, it has been a long wait but will be sad to see my 6 series go as I do love that car.

Thought I would update everyone - MBUK honoured the £500 tax invoiced and took the hit on the additional £700. Result all round. My car is now in the UK and is being picked up on Friday - a week early! So very excited!

Had a few cars with auto high beam assist before but always disabled it as too slow to react, mb system is brilliant.
1400 miles on mine and heading to Taunton this evening to pick up a puppy, 130 mile round trip and looking forward to it.
Not used sport+ at all yet as the 43 is fast enough in comfort.

Good to hear that they honored the original contract. I'm always paranoid of the auto high beam assist blinding oncoming traffic.
Fully agree and have ALWAYS turned it off in previous cars as they were too slow to react but the intelligent lights are a different beast, absolutely brilliant.

I stumbled upon this old thread and some questions popped up in my mind. It’s good to hear that they honored the original contract and everything went well. But that’s not the case in other situations, I might say. Because of car taxes and their fast way of changing, some people suffer and get affected by it. I have one real case. My brother went through something similar, but he had to pay for it. Consider yourself lucky, I guess. That’s why people need to be aware of car taxes and how they change every year. I’m using a guide to car tax and with its help, I can easily understand how car tax really works. My point is, everyone should be careful and know all the details.
