Mercedes GLC Clonking and juddering on near full steering lock

I have had this problem since new but now the weather is cold and damp or wet the problem is much worse. I have viewed other owners concerns about this phenomena and would like to document my experience.

The car has been with the Mercedes dealership and they have coated the drive shafts with a lubricant to hopefully reduce or remove the problem.

The service manager told me that the clonking noise is from the tyres and another manager told me the car is trying to drive straight ahead (whilst in a turn) and it is the scrubbing of the tyre on the road which is causing the noise and the judder.

The service manager told me the car is safe to drive. However, I'm not so sure.

If I need to turn sharply to avoid a collision I do want the car to turn and avoid the object rather than juddering towards the object.

My wife has said that she would not drive the car until the clonking and juddering was eliminated as it does feel and sound bad when it occurs.

Over the next few days I will check if the lubrication coating has any effect on solving the problem.

I would like to hear the latest situation with regard to all those owners who have the same problem. I.e. is there really a fix or is it a inherent design fault.

ive got a march delivery for a car in 20" rims! I called the dealer to enquirer about this issue and they said it's nothing they have heard of. I struggling to believe him going from this thread. All he said was that he will test drive the car himself before delivery and make sure there are no noises as cluncking isn't the sort of problem I should be getting from a 40-50k car. He said the right thing there. Here is hoping now!

I am experiencing exactly the same issue.

I was also told i need to change to winter tyres. I think this is absurd, surely it is a flaw in MB choice of tyres. If they fit standard tyres (not run flats) I'm sure i wouldn't experience this problem.

I am going to push this issue more with MB as its clear more and more people are complaining about the same problem.

I have the same problem with my GLC 43 AMG purchased September 2016, with the same response from Mercedes H/O. Its an absolute disgrace, Mercedes should stop selling these cars until this problem(sorry "characteristic")has been resolved or at least instruct all dealerships to make potential buyers of these models aware of this "characteristic". They have not done this because they would not sell any cars, I certainly would not have bought mine if I was made aware.
I am instructing my lawyer to deal with this asap.

Action Group Website Launched

Whilst the Honest John website allows people to log their support for a Class Action, it is good to see one of the more vocal complainers has taken the process a step further and created a dedicated website for both existing owners and prospective owners to register their complaint. Jean-Paul de Jong (posting as "dejongj" on the MB World and MB Club UK forums) has put up a very professional website to serve as a focal point for all owners afflicted by this crabbing issue. I suggest you click the link below and register as I suspect this is where any further news updates on the situation will break first.

The Mercedes Crabbing Website

As the site rightly states: "Together We Are Stronger".
Hope this helps.

The Mercedes Crabbing Website

I've been trying to post here but keep getting error message-
ERROR: You have entered an incorrect reCAPTCHA value

That's very strange Hurly! Although I'm not affected, I thought I'd just try the registration process and it all went through fine. I clicked in the reCAPTCHA box to prove I'm not a robot and got the required green tick and immediately got an email in my Inbox informing me my application was pending approval from one of the team members. I use the Opera browser under Windows 10 to view websites.

Thanks Toobad - I got registered ok but got the error message when I tried to make comment in the Blog section. No reCAPTCHA box appeared at all. I'll keep trying.

Hello daba and welcome to the forum

We have the GLC AMG Line SUV on 20" wheels and it's a super looking car, very comfortable and a good value when compared against the competition.

However, the above only applies if you can live with the crabbing, juddering and bouncing problem + excessive front tyre wear. Some owners don't find this a problem but many do. Personally, after spending best part of ÂŁ50K on a luxury family car it really annoys me, so embarrassing if we take family or friends out in our new MB that drives like a tractor when parking and taking corners at low speed - MB claim this awful fault is simply a 'comfort characteristic' of all GLC's that owners must accept and live with.

MB owners pay a premium for a high quality, luxury driving experience.

These characteristics appears to have been lost in translation when MB converted the successful left-hand drive European / US GLC for right-hand drive customers here in the UK :(

If possible test drive a second-hand GLC on 20" wheels that has done a couple of thousand miles - this might help with your ultimate decision.

Which dealer are you purchasing from?

Hi Tony
Thanks for your response to my question re the crabbing , that seems to be the general aspect of the vehicle ! so it a case of accept the issues or look at alternant vehicles. In my opinion the car is not bad for value a great looks too, but in paying 45k on a so called premium vehicle it should come without this problem. I understand that MB don't seem to recognise they have a problem or are they just brushing it under the carpet ?.

Agree with what you say daba and response from MB isn't good but remember ALL RH drive cars don't have the issue, I also spoke to the sales rep regarding issue and he said he didn't know about it. He phoned me the next day to say he had spoken to service department and was now aware and asked if I wanted a test drive in a GLC. I told him that it would be pointless as the car may not have it and mine may, he then said I would have 30 days to reject without giving a reason which I thought was unusual for him to say.
I get car 3 weeks on Wednesday so will post on forum what I find, good or bad.
I have stuck with the 19 inch wheels, not because of the issue but if I wanted 20 inch it would put the delivery back 3 months. This made me wonder if MB are looking at issue and believe it is partially due to wheel size as there is no way I can see them using a supplier that can't supply for 3 months.

Update below from the other UK - GLC wheel judder post.

Very interesting and guess those waiting for their GLC's to arrive will be offered the same disclaimer?

I've been told today, 6/2/17, by Lookers, the dealer I bought my GLC from, that there is an internal Mercedes notification that has been distributed stating that prospective customers are to be demonstrated the vehicle and asked to sign a disclaimer. This to me, at least is an admission of the problem. There is meant to be a 'public' notification on the 17/2/17. I am in the process of returning the vehicle on the basis that I was not told about it when I bought it and would have not gone ahead with the purchase had I been.
Bought many cars but never had to sign a disclaimer saying I'd be happy to live with a fault the manufacturer is aware of but not going to fix :)

Would I have purchased my GLC based on this requirement = NO

Has anyone ever heard of such a disclaimer being issued ahead of buying a new car?

Won't be signing mine.

#83 ·
I am wondering where we stand when we have paid a deposit, agreed the deal and signed the New Vehicle Order form. They certainly cannot retain your deposit if you pull out as this disclaimer was not part of the original deal agreed some time ago.

#84 ·
Cheers Tony Mac for the heads up on this interesting development. Better to know BEFORE we commence taking deliveries maybe!

I have forwarded your post to the salesman I have been dealing with and stated if he is in receipt of the disclaimer be aware I shall NOT be signing it.

I have yet to receive a reply but to be fair not sure he is in today so will see what maps out...

Hopefully somebody with a legal background can chip in but my understanding of Contract Law is that the contract is not complete until "consideration has passed". I think this means the contract is only deemed complete when you have paid for and received your car. Up to that point either party can "frustrate" the contract either by withdrawing completely and walking away or renegotiating a new amended contract. So essentially Mercedes can refuse to proceed unless the buyer now signs the disclaimer and the buyer retains the right to refuse and have the contract set aside.

Just spoke to my salesman who wasn't aware of this, he isn't in tomorrow and will phone me on Wednesday. I have made it perfectly clear to him that I will not be signing any disclaimer and will cancel my car.
You are correct Toobad, if they change the circumstances under which you agreed the contract the buyer has the right to cancel and all money paid refunded to them.
This will seriously harm MB'S reputation if correct, the motoring press will slaughter them and quite rightly.

Hi all
In reply to my visit to the dealership that holds my deposit on a new GLC on Sat 4th and me confronting them re the issue of crabbing. The sales guy said he was not aware of anything , I asked to speak dealer principle he also said he was not aware of issues either. After showing them all the issues raised on this forum they said they would reply to me today.I had to phone them, spoke to dealer principle who said yes mb had said there is a so called crabbing issues but mb refused to say its a problem and quoted its a characteristic !!.
They offered me a 48 hour test drive to see for my self re any problem and hopefully notice the crabbing. Also said mb will not be doing anything about it or nothing in the pipeline to rectify issues.

I remember VAG saying the emissions cheat software actually wasn't any such thing. Americans now getting a compensation payout and lawyers all over Europe lining up to take them on to insist on the same over here for present owners of defective vehicles like myself.

MB need to be very careful how they handle this as any sign of deception and they will be jumped on. Has certainly tarnished this superb car for some owners already or the possibility of for the prospective ones...

I am due to collect mid-March. I contacted my dealer this afternoon who, so far, I have been very happy with. He readily acknowledged the 'disclaimer' form. I stated that under no circumstances would I be signing it or anything like it. (I was asked why not!) I was ready to cancel the order there and then.
However, he asked for time to speak to his management and I received a call some time after informing me that on collection there would be no requirement to sign any disclaimer. I shall follow this conversation up with an e-mail to them outlining my understanding of the conversation.
