Mercedes GLC first impressions

Yay! My dream came true and I finally own a Mercedes.

I bought my brand new Mercedes 220d AMG Line Premium last week and has been driving for 2 days now and would like to share my first impression. Currently in the UK, but last 4 years I was in California driving a BMW 328i Convertible, 2010, Premium. I bought it used and therefore would be compare it to BMW of 7 years old (production of 2009).

I have a 13 month old baby and has wanted an SUV for a long time. I drove one in US when they came out, but we moved back to UK so i drove: Volvo XC60, BMW X3, Land Rover Discovery Sport and VW Tiguan 2017.

1. Mercedes polish, look and feel is outstanding. It's just not overwhelming as other cars I saw and the quality is superb. Nothing new here, every review says that.
2. Ride is very comfortable. I love the size of the wheel. And i do prefer old style instruments.
3. There many details which only Mercedes makes, like place where you can put your ankle is a bit rounded to be more comfortable.
4. We drove for about 1.5 hours with my family and drive is very relaxing.
5. Reverse camera works pretty good (not very popular apparently in UK)
6. Park assist should be cool, but it didn't came up for me yet.
7. Eco drive display is nice.

Now what Mercedes lacks. Well, software. Everyone says that, but i didn't expect it to be that much behind.

1. Split screen. I would like to choose split screen to show half navigation and half maybe some other info. in BMW i could do that, and when turn would come it would show the instruction for a bit and then get back to my other things. Very useful very safe. It would at least help if i could choose say Trip option, but when instruction is about to come up it would show up in the onboard display. Not an option. I would say that the biggest annoyance.

2. Voice command, seriously to get this you have to spend another 1.7K with Command, BMW just had it 8 years ago.

3. Garmin Map, they have actually updated it to version 6. But i feel like Mercedes should just stick to one option, overall it should simply provide same experience not cut corners. It has ok feature set, i didn't really care cause you cannot beat mobile nowadays, but at least make it fast, recalculating routers takes a bit too long. Also, i am pretty sure Garmin can provide a software with better option.

4. No clock display? Can i just show at least clock on this 7inch display. No nice Trip stats to show on big screen?

5. Consumption display on big screen is simply ugly.

6. Overall Menu navigation takes too much clicks.

7. Touchpad is not in comfortable space.

8. No CarPlay -> Probably won't even come through update cause i not with Comand online.

When i was getting a car i couldn't wait around so i couldn't get Lane assist and Active (histrionic) Cruise Control. It's bizarre to me that Mercedes Dealers mostly have cars without those features.

Overal i am very happy. There is something very rewarding when you drive a Mercedes. Enjoyment. calmness and satisfaction.

Just wanted to share it with you guys.

P.S. Administrators maybe it is possible to create a Tips section. I am sure there are hidden bits and pieces someone can share. i.e. i read about HOLD function, but yet didn't figure out how to enable it :)

Good report, command system on mine came as part of premium plus pack at £2995, sounds a lot but was an absolute bargain when I paid £2500 to upgrade the stereo on my Discovery sport.

hmm, it was another 1695 on top of Premium which i thought is not money well spent :) i would rather get Driver Package for the same money. But there were no vehicle in the country with that option at the time of buying unless you prepared to wait 12 weeks, which i could not :)

But again we talking about Mercedes of course, so if was going full package with budget, i would get air suspension, driver package, premium plus and heads on display which would be additional 5-7K.
Forgot to mention no Siri. But looks like in fact Comand Online which is only available in Premium Plus does have split screen functionality and even prompts upcoming instructions into driver display.

i really hope garmin updates it software to do the same. very pity Mercedes offers different experience, don't really understand that cost saving.
Heard a lot of good things about Microsoft's Cortana, hopefully that will find its way into our cars because at this rate it will have done a lot of learning in its current form. Ultimately giving us the option of choosing between Cortana, Siri, Alexa, etc. will be best.
congrats and thanks for the write up ! we are getting ours soon, cant wait!
Congrats on getting your first Mercedes! Seems like where the GLC is lacking for you is the infotainment system, maybe it'll function better after an update, but who knows when and if that'll happen.
Yeah, in my experience car manufactures don't update the system that often or don't add features to existing models. So i don't have any hopes for CarPlay or anything else.

I unfortunately didn't realise that Premium package doesn't come with Comand Online cause the way brochure and had a chance to drive with Garmin Map Pilot now. It's shame Mercedes uses them. Having a background in SatNav mobile phone development i am very familiar with a field and think they could have done better. The system is awful and lacks basic functionality like: Giving options with 3 different routes (BMW use to do that in 2010 model) all new sat nags do that as well. Perhaps i want to choose a different route? Or want to see an overview. Also it is very very slow, in 2007 we use to have way slower sd cards than now and software was much faster.

I am actually thinking of writing a complain/feedback to Mercedes just need to find a good email address to send it to. If enough people would complain perhaps they will change it for new owners.

I think there should be one overall experience you either offer it or not.

At least in the future there's hope for over the air updates much like what Tesla has been doing which is something I can't wait for. Our phones have been able to do it for years, its about time that cars catch up.
Just wanted to update this thread on how I am getting on with the car. I absolutely love it. Want to drive all the time. We have recently drove from U.K. To Paris and it was a blast. No tired at all. Garmin sucked big time but good I had Waze and free roaming data :)

The car is very comfortable I would suggest everyone to get premium plus and wait for lane assist and blind spot

Glad to hear that, are you at least taking it on some twisty roads? I know its not a sports car but often I find these new MB's regardless of which one you buy are often very fun to drive in proportion to what the competition offers....although BMW is one exception.

I know what you talking about :) i had bmw 328i Convertible in North California before and did 40k miles. Drove to Seattle, Washington and San Diego and LA a few times. Would be hard to beat that. But Mercedes is a comfy drive and that's what i really enjoy :)
