We took the caravan across to Ayr for a few days this week.
Fully laden twin axle, 1800kg plus a full car boot. Covered 350 miles towing and the car handled it with ease despite some brisk winds and rain so quite happy with it.

Typical cr*p Scottish weather though. :wink2:

I noticed on your signature you have an electric tow bar - we have a twin axle Swift that we will be towing when our car arrives (we went for obsidian black 220d sport premium plus). Can I ask where you had it fitted or what make the tow kit is? Also does it affect the foot wave boot opening when not in use? thank you!

I believe somebody answered that if the electric towbar is fitted the hands free opening is disabled.

Hi Emma

Mine is an MB factory fitted towbar with which the foot operation works perfectly however I understand that when you have an aftermarket bar fitted you lose the hands free boot facility.
I had made a number of enquiries before choosing the car and was told that by 3 different fitting companies.

Thank you lons, I’ll contact MB and ask them about fitting one - won’t risk taking it elsewhere just in case!
When I was looking originally I asked the saleswoman about towbars and she said they weren't available and I would have to source from a specialist company. Her face was just a bit red when I pointed out that I could configure a factory fit on line and that in fact one of their own demonstrators had one fitted. :smile2:

I suspect though that even if the dealer fits for you it will compromise the hands free function. Hope I'm wrong but my experience with other brands like Audi and BMW is that the dealers are useless for towbars and you're better off with a specialist. To give an example, I had my last Audi A6 fitted with a Westfalia bar and Audi wiring kit, correctly coded etc, cost me £670 while the Audi dealer quoted £1170 for exactly the same.

cheers
Bob
