The AMG C43 is a Great car but afraid there’s No Fix for the awful Crabbing & Juddering Fault 🤷‍♂️

Smaller wheels reduce the Crabbing

New tyres - more flexible rubber tread - help to hide / mask the Crabbing

Winter tyres also mask the Crabbing

You will also find the C43 ‘eats tyres’ - lucky if you get 6/7 k miles

Good luck negotiating with the dealer - I would suggest videoing the Crabbing Fault and sending it directly to MB HQ
Thanks Tony
I have been doing a lot of reading including consumer guarantees (Australia). We are going to have a meeting with dealer in next couple of days to discuss options…given my partner bought this car for a pleasurable driving experience, I feel this issue significantly disappoints! Every time we go out in it the first thing we experience is the severe and noisey juddering as we reverse out of our driveway.
Appreciate your feedback. Thanks again.

MB admitted the Crabbing & Juddering was unacceptable on all other none AMG GLC’s, designing and engineering new Steering components. These expensive parts were fitted FOC under Warranty for everyone who asked - would have cost MB a fortune

So, MB admitted there was a Fault with the Steering Geometry for all GLC’s accept the AMG C43 & C63?

MB expect owners of their Flagship AMG GLC’s to live with the awful Crabbing & Juddering - very strange

Good luck

Tony

Wow that’s interesting Tony..would you happen to have a link or any reference to that admission by MB?
we met with dealership GM today…whilst very understanding and willing to consider some options he acknowledges that there is no “fix”. He is going to take ours and drive it himself whilst we take another demo (just in case there’s a difference). Interestingly he said that he advises his sales personnel to warn buyers of this potential tyre skip but this never happened. He says most buyers that know these high performance vehicles are aware…but we were new to this vehicle type(altho had HP non SUV vehicles before)…we shall see what happens… I really appreciate your input…Thankyou.

Hi again,

There are documents / letters in this Forum thread & other similar Forum threads from MB HQ telling Sales people to inform all prospective GLC customers about the Crabbing & Juddering.

There are also documents from MB HQ informing existing customers that New Steering Knuckles have been designed to fix the Crabbing and Juddering - but not for AMG C43 customers.

Use the Search Tools on this Forum and you should be able to find this information - This issue has been bouncing for around 8+ years. This drove and others crazy, as I'm sure you can tell :)

Good luck

Tony

Hi Shazza13,
We’re in New Zealand and have exactly the same issue with a GLC AMG 43 that we brought new 2 years go. Similarly we’ve been to the dealer and have essentially been fobbed off. We were not advised of this issue before purchase. A concern we have now is that I suspect that we would have difficulty selling the vehicle privately should we wish to do so. Like others, we very much like the vehicle, but find this problem almost unbelievable for a vehicle from MB and in this price range. We’re now contemplating our next step which may be considering our legal options under Consumer Guarantee legislation - “fit for purpose”, and all that. Are you able to update us on how you have got on with your dealer and/or MB ? I did ask our dealer would he guarantee “full” trade in value should we wish to replace it and was told “yes”. So one option we are also considering is to trade it in but for what ? We would really appreciate any other thoughts or advice. Thank you.

I have exactly the same problem with my GLC220D in the UK which I have had from brand new. The knocking noise is worse in the winter. She has been in and out of the dealership and from what I can gather, it is not a safety issue but it is common with GLC’s? Design fault? My other issue is that the “Stolen Vehicle Help” on my Mercedes Me app has never worked. When I go into it the app just says Stolen Vehicle Help not working! Great if my car gets stolen! Does anyone else have that problem too? Mercedes are still trying to get to the bottom of it this end …

Tina - There is a Fix for 220 D GLC’s

Your dealer should have offered to fit new Steering Knuckles under Warranty. These new components change the steering geometry, reducing the fault but not totally removing it. We had new Knuckles and All Season tyres on our our 250D and they transformed the car in the winter.

if your car is post 2019 it should already have the knuckles fitted

Hope this helps

It's now 2024 and my Glc300 has the same noise issue on stearing left or right on cold temperature. The car has 20000 miles. The dealer reacted the same like this is an old issue for which there is no fix. Shame on Mecedes.

Just about to buy a 2018 glc c43, it’s shocking they released a fix for the non amg models and left those with the c43 / c63 with nothing!

This company is selling camber / castor adjustable bushes for the c43 and c63 saying it resolves the issue, has anyone got these fitted?

Mercedes GLC Clonking and juddering on near full steering lock

I have had this problem since new but now the weather is cold and damp or wet the problem is much worse. I have viewed other owners concerns about this phenomena and would like to document my experience.

The car has been with the Mercedes dealership and they have coated the drive shafts with a lubricant to hopefully reduce or remove the problem.

The service manager told me that the clonking noise is from the tyres and another manager told me the car is trying to drive straight ahead (whilst in a turn) and it is the scrubbing of the tyre on the road which is causing the noise and the judder.

The service manager told me the car is safe to drive. However, I'm not so sure.

If I need to turn sharply to avoid a collision I do want the car to turn and avoid the object rather than juddering towards the object.

My wife has said that she would not drive the car until the clonking and juddering was eliminated as it does feel and sound bad when it occurs.

Over the next few days I will check if the lubrication coating has any effect on solving the problem.

I would like to hear the latest situation with regard to all those owners who have the same problem. I.e. is there really a fix or is it a inherent design fault.

John
I believe it’s a design fault however MB never admits it. My car is brand new and it makes these ticking noise as if the CV joints are worn out

I don't know if this helps, but I have just been advised to fit front wheel spacers. Any thoughts?
Hi, I have front spacers on my Amg 20” wheels and it crabs at very low speeds. I’ve been advised that its tyres but it did the same with the last tyres as well. Tracking and camber have also been mentioned 🤷‍♂️

My CClass 220 AWD does the same thing; crabbing & juddering on full lock turns. Terrible. In cold weather it’s almost frightening for passengers. I’ve been told that it’s a characteristic of all-wheel drive …. And that it might be alleviated by fitting winter tyres … but, will it??

Smaller wheels with Winter tyres will certainly help mask the Crabbing 👍

It is a Shocking noise and awful feeling - you get used to it, but passengers can’t believe a modern SUV has such a Shocking characteristic - unacceptable 😤

When I make a left turn or right turn there's knocking with the tires I took it to the dealership and they told me it was due to summer tires. I took my car to a auto service repair shop who specialize in Mercedes-Benz and he said it could be the transfer Suspension. My car is still under warranty, I'm taking it back to dealership once again for the same problem, I have 2023 glc 43 amg.

Hi All
I have a friend who upgrades performance cars and he thinks that he may have the answer. He believes that there are some sort of shim that can be added to the top of the suspension arm that will alter the geometry ( at least that’s the way I understand it). So I’m thinking of giving it ago, nothing to lose. I’ll report back my findings 🤞
